Do you feel your child would benefit from counselling?

As a parent it can be very difficult to know what to do if you are faced with a child or young person who you feel may need some sort of professional counselling help.

Children and young people feel stress the same as adults and may feel very confused by their feelings.
Childhood stress can be:
• Family
• School friends
• For older children it may be academic and social pressures.

Children are often more aware than you about what is happening around them they may overhear adults talking about situations that they don't understand for example:
• Money worries
• Relatives illness
• Fighting parents

Getting professional help for a child or young person can begin to help them understand their feelings, they may have problems experiencing these feelings because they want to keep a family secret or they may become more violent shy or withdrawn. Although children all experience these feelings at some point it is a part of growing up if they continue for a long time it may be necessary to get some professional help.

So what are the signs that your child may need some professional help?

•Long periods of sadness
•Living in the past they may be unable to move on from a loss
•They may withdraw from their friends and family spending lots of time on their own
•Small children may not want to detach from their parents
•Trouble concentrating
•Their daily routine may change either getting up earlier or in the case of a teenager struggling to get out of bed more than usual
•They may return to acting as young children
•A sense of guilt over something or a situation that they have no control over
•An increased sense of anger
•Temper tantrums
•Feeling anxious and worried

How do we counsel a child?
Clearly children cannot be counselled in the same way that an adult can, often they will not have the words that an adult would used they just know that they feel bad.

Counselling can be done through play through reading writing or drawing a child may find it easier to express their feelings though a character in a story book for example. Art and play are important ways that children feel comfortable expressing themselves.
